QYOTA (ki-yo-ta)

Questions You Ought To Ask

What exactly do you do?

This is the question that used to cause a knot in my stomach until I switched from an either/or mindset to both/and. Now I say, I am a writer and law professor who enjoys exploring things that hint at wonder, magic, and joy.

If you could have any job title in the whole wide world, what would it be?

Dream Weaver or Magic Keeper. Both sound like they would be incredibly fun.

Who do you write for?

The hidden and unseen.

Funniest gift you’ve received?

A tiny purple pin with white writing that says, “She Never Follows The Recipe.”

How does being from the Caribbean influence your writing?

When you're from the Caribbean, you occupy an insider-outsider perspective. It's a soul-stirring mix of unrivaled natural beauty, savory cuisines, pulsating beats, lyrical and dynamic language, nuance, innuendo, post-colonial hardship in all its manifestations, but above all else rootedness and resilience. These are the themes that time and time again show up in my writings.

Is “QYOTA” a made up thing?

Kind of. FAQ’s always make me want to ask, by whom? Who is asking these frequently asked questions?
